The Why!

My goal for this blog is to share what I have tried with my students in my church's youth group. One of my many goals for youth group is for students to know, be known, and to know God.

I try to show students that our church cares for them by spending time with them and getting to know what makes them tick, what they like, what they don't like...

Here are a few ideas that I have tried.

1. To help students celebrate getting their drivers permit and recognize they're reaching a major rite of passage by getting them a key chain. Key chains of something that they are into. Jordan is into Mindcraft so I got him a Mindcraft key chain. Every time Jordan notices his key chain he'll remember that our church and our youth leaders care for him.

2. When I found that students are sick I send them a card and include a tea packet for high school students. For middle school students I send them a sticker page, it may seem a little childish but the students say they like it.

3. For high school seniors graduating in spring I have a builtin board in the back of the church auditoromy for everyone to see and I ask parents to create a poster board with pictures, Bible verses that speak of hopes that the parents have for their student, and the students next plans. I also put the "Graduate of the Month" in the church's announcements so that the whole church will get to know the student. One of my goals is to connect the congregation with each student because many youth ministry books say that students need 5 adults besides relatives to connect with them in order for students to have a vibrant faith. High school is really late in the game so I am thinking of trying 8th grade graduates too.
